Shaping the Libraries of Tomorrow: BYBLIOS Project Outputs & Insights

What happens when libraries become inclusive spaces for learning, growth, and employment? The BYBLIOS project is showing us the way.

Our Key Outputs:
- Participatory Research: We listened to voices from across Europe – librarians, library staff, and directors – using focus groups and surveys.
- Inclusive Library Model: A new framework to make school libraries places of professional development and social inclusion, especially for people with disabilities.
- Training Pathways: Tailored learning opportunities to upskill both current library staff and adults with cognitive disabilities.
- Internship Pilots: Practical work experiences in school libraries, helping participants gain autonomy, skills, and visibility.

What did we learn from the focus groups?
A Shared Vision: Libraries of the future must be inclusive, community-based, and digitally innovative.

Challenges:

  • Distant and unresponsive leadership

  • Lack of continuous staff training

  • Accessibility barriers

  • Understaffing and limited resources

Proposed solutions:

  • Invest in assistive technologies

  • Create accessible, adaptive spaces

  • Introduce support tutors for staff with disabilities

  • Recognize and promote the value of inclusive employment

“Working in a library gives people with disabilities visibility, self-confidence, and a role in the community.”

The journey has just begun, but the direction is clear: inclusive libraries mean inclusive societies.
