Inclusive Libraries in Action!
Over the past two years, BYBLIOS has transformed libraries into dynamic hubs for inclusion, innovation, and community empowerment. Thanks to the joint efforts of our partners across Italy, Portugal, Romania, Germany, and Spain, school libraries are evolving into accessible, welcoming workplaces for adults with disabilities and opportunities for growth for librarians.
Highlights from Italy:
At the Istituto Comprensivo Statale of Spoltore, two library assistants, Rosa and Alessia, are gaining valuable experience through internships – an initiative supervised by the University “Gabriele d’Annunzio” of Chieti-Pescara.
What we learned:
1) Libraries are seen as future spaces for inclusive community integration, balancing digital innovation with a strong local presence.
2) Challenges remain – limited leadership involvement, lack of resources, and accessibility gaps – but the solutions are clear:
- Assistive technologies
- Training for inclusive practices
- Support tutors for staff with disabilities
- Creating accessible, inclusive environments
As one participant shared: “Inclusion in libraries breaks stereotypes, boosts empathy, and enriches the workplace.”
Our research combined focus groups and surveys to ensure lived experiences and professional insights shape the next steps.
Libraries are not just for reading – they are platforms for professional growth, social inclusion, and empowerment.
Let’s keep building a future where everyone belongs.
